1. What are Smart Meters?
Smart Meters are programmed to communicate electronically with BGE via a secure radio frequency. The meter sends BGE daily energy consumption data, which will be stored and used to compute your monthly bill. Energy consumption is tracked hourly for both gas and electric meters. Once the program is fully operational, it will no longer be necessary for BGE to manually read your meter. We will be able to provide you with accurate, timely usage information, regardless of weather conditions, without having to set foot on your property.

You’ll be able to track your energy use online at www.bge.com. Also, you can see how you’re using energy, monitor energy peaks, and even learn ways to better manage energy use through demand response and energy-efficiency programs.
